LA SIGAda* Meeting
TOPIC: METHODMAN II
SPEAKER: Dr. Bill Riddle
DATE: Monday, 17 December 1984
TIME: 6:30 p.m.
LOCATION: TRW Building E2 Presentation Room
CONTACT: Carol LeDoux at 615-4360
ABSTRACT:
The original METHODMAN document established a rationale for
Ada-compatible software methodologies. This document included a
preliminary set of requirements for these methodologies and a
preliminary set of characteristics useful in comparing and contrasting
them. Follow-on work, guided by the public commentary on METHODMAN I,
has attempted to establish a conceptual basis for comparing
methodologies according to their value for Ada-based software projects.
This work has included an accounting of the concepts underlying software
methodology, a specification of the problems involved in methodology
evaluation, and the definition of an extensible framework for organizing
the large collection of characteristics critical to evaluating
methodologies.
These results are reported in the next edition in the continuing series
of METHODMAN documents, METHODMAN II, which will be available in early
1985. They will be reviewed in this talk with ample time for audience
discussion and commentary.
Bill Riddle is an independent consultant specializing in research,
development, education and evaluation projects in the software
engineering environments area. He has worked on Software Technology for
Adaptable, Reliable Systems (STARS) projects for two years and has been
actively involved in the METHODMAN Project. Before becoming an
independent consultant, he directed software design and engineering work
at Cray Laboratories, a research and development subsidiary of Cray
Research. Prior to that, he was a professor of computer science at the
Universities of Michigan and Colorado. His work has emphasized the
description and analysis of software designs and the delivery of
description and analysis techniques to practitioners through automated
software environments. He is a former ACM National Lecturer and is
currently chair of ACM SIGSOFT.
Note:
1) LA SIGAda will be taking the Dr. Riddle to dinner after the meeting, if
