That's probably a good way to work it if you don't have a user-defined
hash function, or if the user doesn't want to create one. Since you have
to hash the key on every lookup, this would seem to be a lot of overhead
if you can avoid it.

And of course you still have to ensure that two "equal" keys hash to
equal values, implying that two equal keys have to stream out to the
same sequence of bytes.
