Keynote Speakers

Key leaders from industry, academia, and government will be addressing
TRI-Ada '91. They will focus on their achievements to date and share their
visions, plans, and expectations for tomorrow.

Joan Bebb, Chief Engineer, Systems Engineering and Development Division,
TRW. Mrs Bebb graduated from San Diego State University in 1960 and joined
TRW in 1974. Mrs Bebb has been a major contributor to significant software
developments sponsored by the US Government. She has managed and
architected very large systems involving extensive embedded real time
software and distributed hardware. She has helped design state-of-the-art
languages and CASE tools, and has assisted in defining processes and
procedures that foster good software engineering and project management
techniques.

Mrs Bebb will discuss the major directions that US software development
might take in the 1990s.

Jean-Marie Cadiou, Director, European Strategic Programme for R&D in
Information Technology (ESPRIT), Commission of the European Communities. Dr
Cadiou received his PhD from Stanford University in Computer Science in
1972, and became Scientific Director at INRIA in France. In 1975, Dr Cadiou
joined IBM, holding positions in Paris and California, including head of
Programming Technology Research at IBM San Jose Laboratory. He became
director of New Information Technologies in the Commission of the European
Communities in 1981.

Dr Cadiou will discuss the Ada and software engineering initiatives
sponsored by the ESPRIT program, and the effectiveness of multi-national
academic/industrial collaboration on technology transition.

A Nico Habermann, Professor and Dean of the School of Computer Science,
Carnegie Mellon University. Dr Habermann received his PhD from the
Technological University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 1967, and was
named head of the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon in 1972.
Dr Habermann became the first dean of CMU's School of Computer Science in
1988.

Dr Habermann will discuss the key concepts introduced by Ada in 1980 and
will focus on new ideas introduced by functional languages and
object-oriented programming that will contribute to more optimal system
implementation.

Jan Hext, Professor of Computing, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.
Dr Hext received his PhD in Computer Science from Cambridge University in
1966. He was on the faculty of the University of Sydney for 15 years and
then moved to Macquarie University, where he is the foundation Professor of
Computing.

Dr Hext will review some key educational issues that face the Ada community.
These include the image of Ada in the non-Ada community; the opportunities
in academia; the shortage of high quality materials and software; the
challenge of real-time, embedded systems; and the general level of
professionalism. The talk will include some practical suggestions, based on
six years' experience of teaching Ada to students and systems engineers in
Australia.

Karl Reed, Director, Amdahl Australian Intelligent Tool Programme,
Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering at La Trobe
University. Mr Reed has worked for Elliott Bros, ICIANZ, LMEricsson, Monash
University, RMIT and now La Trobe University. He has played a major role in
the development of software engineering teaching in Australia, and in the
development of technology policy.

Mr Reed will address the impact of national information technology industry
promotion and R&D strategies on the future of software engineering.

Jean Francois Wets, Director of Air Traffic Control Centers Activity,
Thomson-CSF. Mr Wets graduated from Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Arts et
Metiers in 1975 and from Ecole Superieure d'Electricite in 1977, and joined
the air traffic control (ATC) department of Thomson-CSF. Since then, he has
participated in the design and implementation of software for more than
twenty ATC centers. In 1983, he introduced Ada as the application language
for all ATC systems.

Mr Wets will discuss the past eight years of experience at Thomson-CSF using
Ada for developing several air traffic control centers, in terms of
reusability, performance, cost effectiveness, and commercial impact.

General Ronald W Yates, Commander, US Air Force Systems Command. General
Yates graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1960 and flew 100 combat
missions in Southeast Asia. In 1970, he earned an MS degree in Systems
Management from USC. General Yates was appointed Director of Tactical
Systems for the Aeronautical Systems Division (ASD) in 1983, and became
system program director for the F-16 fighter - the largest aircraft
acquisition program in the history of the Department of Defense. He assumed
his present command at Andrews Air Force Base in April 1990.

General Yates will discuss government initiatives in Ada and software
engineering.
