I've noticed a fair few pointless or nonsense threads that seem to come
from random nutjobs recently.

It might be a fairly common characteristic of news groups in general
rather than something peculiar to this news group specifically.

I think they're funny sometimes, and it seems to loosen things up and
inspire people to engage.

From the groups I read on and off , they are much more common on  comp.lang.forth
or  comp.lang.lisp  than  comp.lang.ada . comp.lang.c  has quite a few at present.
They can be amusing at times.
