The Ada jobs page is rather out of date. Maybe a better
strategy is to watch misc.jobs.offered and other newsgroups
and set your news reader to filter on Ada. Watch out for
all the Adabase, Canada and all the other false hits that make
this a good test of your regex knowledge. Also, there are web
sites that are job oriented and you can search for keywords there.

There will be an occasional ad here in comp.lang.ada as well.

As for hiring "interns", well my employer is hiring some people
fresh from college. You might also see what facilities your
college has for setting up interviews with companies that match
your interests.

Good Luck!

I have always wanted to work on an Ada project. While working for a
computer vendor, I provided consulting to some customers (now no longer in
existence) using Ada. I've written Ada programs for learning purpose.
However, most of my work has been in C++ for the past 15 years.

The reason for my interest is that I also do a lot of Object Pascal work
and I find that in spite of my very neat and careful C++ coding, whenever I
port to Object Pascal I discover a lot of errors in my C++ code. I'm
interest in seeing on a large scale any Ada improved reliability.

The problem is I can never find any Ada consulting work, let alone any
where they would take someone for a first real Ada project.

Is anyone really using Ada in Northern NJ?

I have certainly seen Ada jobs advertized in NJ (not sure if they're N
or not). Right now there are 3 on dice.com. Be sure to search for 'ada
"software engineer"' or you'll get every job with an ADA disclaimer.

To be more precise, a search on Dice turns up 3 listings in NJ. I didn't
look at the details. In practice, you'll see a lot of "C++, Ada a plus"
listings. I don't know what that means, but it may mean they're
injecting errors into perfectly good systems by rewriting them in C++.
It should be a crime to take such a job. But 1/3 or more of the listings
are usually real Ada jobs.

Ada is a good language, but there is really very little Ada jobs.

Only hope for more Ada jobs is to have more open source Ada projects
start.

This will make Ada become popular again, and will get more people
interested in it, and eventually this will carry over to commerical
work.

How is the gcc/GNAT integration going on? I have not been following
that for some time. Is GNAT now completely integrated with gcc? can one
now compile any Ada program using gcc without having to download any
additional software or install anything else?

Steve

GNAT is IMHO well integrated for some time now. 3.4.x and 4.0.x work
quite well, the 4 series adds some support for Ada 2005. "Any Ada program"
may require any other software needed by that Ada program, though,
if the other software is not part of Ada or the GNAT library.

Debian GNU/Linux and MinGW have ready made compilers, Debian adds
a number of libraries, some for 3.15p (with corrections) though.

Unfortunately, the jobs ads for N. NJ are all for the same job from
different sources.....and it requires a security clearance creating the
classic chicken and egg problem.

Looking in detail at the 3 positions on Dice.com, one is a contract
position in Nutley looking for Ada tasking experience and requires a
secret clearance. The other 2 are direct positions with SAIC in Red Bank
and are C/++ and Java positions ("Ada a plus").

So Dice has 1 Ada position in NJ right now. If you don't have a
clearance, that could be a problem. On the other hand, if you're in that
area, you may have an idea which company it is, and could approach the
company directly and get around the clearance requirement that way.

I agree that much progress has been made in the integration of GNAT
into GCC. However, ASIS and GLADE for GCC 4.0 are still missing,
unfortunately.

I'd suggest that generating lots of open source Ada projects is a rather
circuitous route to more Ada jobs. Its rather uncertain that there is
any direct correlation between lines of open source code available in a
language and jobs using that language. At best, that could take a long
time before it had the desired effect.

Much more likely to create Ada jobs is to create and market some kind of
product in which Ada is a factor. If a guy builds a Furby and programs
it in Ada and gets a market going for Furbys, he hires more Ada
programmers. Even if its an "internal product" - something used by your
company in its critical processes - it creates jobs. The point is that
if you have numerous people using some end product that they consider
valuable, they come up with the money to further its development - and
that makes jobs. It doesn't really matter if the product has open source
code or extremely proprietary code. What matters is that it is a
_Product_ that is _Useful_ and for which people will exchange _Money_.
Otherwise, its all just interesting academics that will never produce a
job for anyone.

And what about Gnatelim, Gnatmetric, GnatPP and Gnatstub? They don't
seem to come with GCC, and as far as I know no separate releases are

That's right; all these commands require ASIS (not sure about gnatpp
though). Even the GNAT 3.15p User's Guide has sections about gnatstub
and gnatelim, but they are part of the ASIS distribution.

Cool! A guy from some "headhunter" company called my and asked if I

was interested in software engineering, but he simply didn't get it.

There are tons of Ada jobs in South Jersey, the main part of the air
traffic control system is being re-written and they're doing it in
probably 80% Ada, we're talking about several million lines of code at
least !
